Choosing Reflection Over Routine: Why I Stepped Back to Move Forward

Introduction

In 2022, I made one of the most important decisions of my life: I took a deliberate step back from active business operations. After years of running companies, managing teams, and navigating the pressures of entrepreneurship, I realized it was time to focus on something more personal — my health, education, and the call to give back.

That year marked not an ending, but a transition. I began to redirect my energy toward reflection, education, and service — the pillars of what I now consider the most meaningful chapter of my journey.

The Turning Point: Recognizing the Need for Change

For years, my days were defined by business meetings, deadlines, and the constant pursuit of growth. Owning and leading companies taught me valuable lessons about leadership, perseverance, and discipline, but it also demanded every ounce of focus and strength.

Eventually, my health began to remind me that success without balance is unsustainable. I learned that leadership isn’t only about pushing forward — sometimes it’s about knowing when to pause.

That realization prompted me to reimagine what fulfillment truly looks like. I stepped back, not to retreat, but to redirect my purpose toward something deeper: education, storytelling, and service.

Education: A New Chapter at Liberty University

One of the greatest gifts of this new chapter is the opportunity to continue learning. I am currently completing my Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) at Liberty University, an experience that allows me to merge real-world leadership with academic research.

My doctoral studies challenge me to think critically about topics like resilience, ethical leadership, and personal transformation — themes that have shaped every part of my journey as a Marine veteran, immigrant, and entrepreneur.

For me, education is no longer just a professional pursuit. It’s personal. It’s about using what I’ve learned to help others lead with integrity, purpose, and empathy.

Writing My Memoir: Lessons from the Journey

Alongside my studies, I’m working on my memoir — a reflection on the path that has brought me here. Writing this book has been both humbling and healing.

In its pages, I explore what it means to serve, to build, to fail, and to begin again. My story spans continents and industries, from my time as a Marine to my experiences as an immigrant building a life and career in America. Each chapter is a lesson in perseverance and gratitude.

This writing process has shown me that storytelling is a form of service. By sharing our stories honestly, we remind others that struggle and success often walk hand in hand — and that both are part of what make us human.

Philanthropy and Mentorship: Giving Back with Purpose

As I’ve transitioned out of full-time business, I’ve found deep fulfillment in philanthropy and mentorship, especially in supporting fellow veterans.

The Marine Corps instilled in me values that never fade — honor, courage, and commitment. Those values now guide how I approach service beyond the uniform. Whether it’s volunteering time, mentoring veterans as they adjust to civilian life, or supporting community causes, I see these efforts as a continuation of the mission to serve.

I’ve learned that giving back doesn’t always require large gestures. Sometimes it’s a conversation, a word of encouragement, or showing someone that you understand their journey. Every act of service, big or small, reinforces what truly matters.

Reflection: Redefining Success and Purpose

Stepping back from business gave me clarity about success – and how easily it can be misdefined.

For many years, success meant growth, productivity, and results. But as I’ve reflected, I’ve come to see success as something quieter and more enduring: peace of mind, meaningful impact, and alignment between what you do and who you are.

This season of life is not about retirement; it’s about refinement. I’m focusing on becoming a better mentor, student, writer, and servant leader. The work may look different now, but the purpose is the same – to build, to serve, and to make a difference where it matters most.

A Message for Those at a Crossroads

If you’re at a similar point – feeling the pull to step back, change direction, or find new meaning – I want to encourage you: listen to that voice. Sometimes the bravest decision isn’t to press forward, but to pause long enough to realign with what truly fulfills you.

Transitions aren’t signs of weakness; they’re signs of growth. Life has seasons, and each one brings opportunities to serve in new ways. Mine happens to be education, reflection, and philanthropy. Yours might look different – but the lesson is the same: you’re never too late to redefine purpose.

Looking Forward: Building Through Reflection

Today, I’m proud to say my focus lies not on profit or performance, but on purpose. Through my doctoral research, memoir writing, and service work, I’m striving to use my experiences to inspire others and contribute to conversations that matter.

This is what I call “building through reflection.” It’s the belief that growth doesn’t stop when we step back – in fact, that’s often when it begins.
