Why I Decided to Step Away in 2022: A Journey of Reflection, Education, and Service

In 2022, I made the intentional decision to step away from active business operations. For many years, my life was defined by the demands of entrepreneurship, ownership, and leadership in high-pressure industries. I was the former owner of Ace Home Services until I stepped down in 2022, closing one chapter of my life to open another.

The years I spent in construction, HVAC, and real estate were both challenging and rewarding. Those industries required long hours, constant stress, and unrelenting energy. But eventually, my health and my spirit told me it was time to pause, reflect, and choose a new direction.

This blog marks the beginning of what I’m calling my “Reflections” series—a place where I share my story as a Marine veteran, immigrant, entrepreneur, and now doctoral candidate at Liberty University. More importantly, it’s a space to discuss what really matters in this stage of my life: education, writing, and giving back to others.

Closing a Chapter: The End of Daily Business Operations

When I left Ace Home Services in 2022, it was not because I no longer cared about business or growth. Instead, it was because I realized that my personal well-being and purpose needed to take priority.

Running businesses for years meant I was constantly in the driver’s seat—managing teams, overseeing operations, solving problems, and navigating risks. It was rewarding, but also exhausting. Eventually, I reached a point where I understood that continuing at the same pace was unsustainable.

Since then, I’ve stepped away from daily management. I am no longer involved in executive decision-making or operational control. That chapter of my professional life has closed, but it leaves behind invaluable lessons about resilience, leadership, and sacrifice.

If you are interested in leadership insights from my business years, you’ll find them woven throughout my future posts. But today, my focus is no longer on the grind of entrepreneurship. It’s on building a legacy that reflects reflection, service, and scholarship.

A New Direction: Education and Scholarship

One of my greatest commitments today is pursuing my Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) at Liberty University. After earning my MBA and building years of experience in leadership, I felt compelled to push further—not only for personal growth but also to deepen the impact I could make in academia and beyond.

Doctoral work is demanding. It requires discipline, patience, and critical thinking. But it also gives me the opportunity to merge my life experiences as a Marine veteran, immigrant, and entrepreneur with research that can help others.

I am passionate about studying leadership, resilience, and storytelling. In many ways, research allows me to look back at my own journey and connect it with broader lessons that benefit organizations, communities, and individuals.

My academic work isn’t just about earning a credential—it’s about creating knowledge that matters. And as I continue down this path, I hope my writing and reflections will serve as encouragement to others who may be navigating big life transitions of their own.

Writing My Memoir: Sharing My Story

Alongside my doctoral journey, I am committed to writing my memoir. This project is deeply personal. It tells the story of my life as a U.S. Marine veteran, immigrant, entrepreneur, and now retired business leader.

Writing a memoir is not about self-promotion—it’s about honesty, healing, and legacy. For me, it is an opportunity to share the lessons of hardship, perseverance, and faith that shaped my life.

I believe stories are powerful tools. They help us make sense of pain, bridge cultural divides, and inspire others to keep moving forward when life feels overwhelming. My hope is that by sharing my journey, I can offer both encouragement and practical wisdom to readers who face their own struggles.

As I write, I also continue to reflect on how my story connects to others. Veterans, immigrants, business owners, and students—all have unique challenges, but also share common themes of resilience and hope.

Giving Back Through Service and Mentorship

One of the most fulfilling parts of this chapter of my life is volunteering and mentoring fellow veterans. While I no longer lead businesses, I have not stopped leading in life.

I volunteer regularly, not for recognition, but because giving back keeps me grounded. Whether it’s supporting veteran initiatives, offering guidance to those transitioning out of military service, or simply being available to listen, I consider this work an extension of my calling.

Mentorship has become one of my priorities. I believe leadership is not measured by titles or positions but by the ability to invest in others. Today, I do this in a limited but meaningful way—offering perspective, encouragement, and advice without being tied down to daily operations.

This season is about impact over income and service over status. It is about living with purpose and aligning my time with values that matter most.

Reflections on Transition and Purpose

Stepping away from business in 2022 was not the end of my journey—it was a pivot. A pivot toward reflection, growth, and meaningful service.

Today, my priorities are clear:

  • Completing my doctorate and contributing to research that inspires.

  • Writing my memoir to share my story of resilience, service, and faith.

  • Mentoring and volunteering, especially within the veteran community.

This direction allows me to live intentionally and stay true to the lessons I’ve learned. It also helps me redefine success—not in terms of revenue or expansion, but in terms of legacy, impact, and authenticity.

If you are reading this and facing your own transition—whether from business, military service, or personal struggle—I want to encourage you: it is never too late to pivot toward what matters most.

Looking Ahead: The “Reflections” Series

This blog post is the beginning of a new section on my website called “Reflections.” Here, I’ll share thoughts on leadership, resilience, service, and the lessons I continue to learn along the way.

Expect stories from my past as a Marine and entrepreneur, insights from my doctoral studies, and reflections on volunteering and community service. My hope is that this space not only documents my journey but also provides encouragement for those seeking their own sense of direction and purpose.

I believe the best way to honor the past is to use it to build a better future—not just for ourselves, but for others. That is what I intend this blog to represent.
